Jute Volatility Index: What This Quarter Tells Us About Prices β and What the New Export Incentive Changes
A quarterly read of Jute Hub's own Jute Volatility Index, and an analysis of how the new 10% cash export incentive on diversified jute products interacts with raw-fibre price pressure.
Jute Hub calculates its Jute Volatility Index (JVI) from a rolling 30-day window of mandi price data β the ratio of price standard deviation to the average price over that window, expressed as a percentage. This quarter's readings have tracked firmer than the same period last year, consistent with tighter raw-fibre supply and the government's recent decision to suspend raw jute exports to stabilise the domestic market.
READING:JVI Tracking Firmer This Quarter Than Last Year
The more interesting question for buyers is how the new export landscape interacts with that volatility. Bangladesh Bank's 10% cash export incentive on diversified jute products, in effect for shipments between July 2026 and June 2027, applies specifically to value-added, diversified goods β not to raw fibre itself. That distinction matters: the incentive doesn't directly reduce raw jute price pressure, but it does sharpen the financial case for mills to convert raw fibre into finished goods domestically rather than exporting it unprocessed, which over time should reduce the volume of raw fibre chasing export demand and ease some of the pressure the JVI is currently picking up.
In practical terms, that means the incentive is a medium-term dampener on raw-material volatility, not an immediate one. Buyers negotiating raw-fibre contracts this quarter should expect continued firmness in line with the current JVI reading; buyers sourcing finished, diversified jute goods may see more competitive pricing sooner, as the incentive pulls mill capacity toward exactly those product categories.
