Bangladesh Turns to Economic Diplomacy to Power a New Era of Jute Exports

Bangladesh's foreign affairs and textiles and jute ministries have joined forces on a coordinated push to expand the country's jute exports, formally launching a Joint Working Group tasked with turning economic diplomacy into export orders. The announcement came out of a coordination meeting titled "Strategic Economic Diplomacy and Export Expansion for Bangladesh's Jute Sector," convened jointly by the State Ministers for Foreign Affairs and for Textiles and Jute.

The new Joint Working Group has a broad mandate: draft a national roadmap for jute exhibitions abroad, work through the trade barriers that still slow shipments into key markets, help establish dedicated jute research centres, and monitor the pace of jute mill modernisation across the sector. Officials at the meeting described the goal in plain terms — position Bangladesh as a trusted, reliable global source of climate-friendly jute solutions, rather than simply the world's largest raw exporter of an under-marketed commodity.

TARGET:$7 Billion Jute Industry

Central to that roadmap is a planned International Jute Expo, intended to bring overseas buyers, brand sourcing teams, and packaging manufacturers face to face with Bangladeshi mills and exporters in one venue. Just as significantly, the plan leans on Bangladesh's diplomatic missions abroad as active sales channels — embassies and trade offices briefed and equipped to promote jute exports directly to foreign buyers and retailers, not just to facilitate government-to-government trade.

The diplomatic push is arriving alongside real fiscal muscle. Under a Bangladesh Bank circular issued in early July, diversified jute products shipped between July 2026 and June 2027 qualify for a 10 percent cash export incentive — a direct subsidy designed to make higher-value jute goods, rather than raw fibre alone, more competitive against synthetic alternatives in destination markets.

For buyers, the signal is straightforward: a sector that has spent decades competing almost entirely on raw fibre price is now organising, for the first time, around a coordinated export strategy — trade diplomacy, modernisation funding, and cash incentives moving in the same direction at once. MASK Associates' own inbound inquiry volume from new international buyers has tracked upward through the first half of the year, consistent with the sector-wide momentum officials are now trying to formalise into lasting market share.
